Ware Malcomb, an award-winning international design firm, today announced that construction is complete on Unchained Labs’ new headquarters in Pleasanton, CA. Ware Malcomb provided civil engineering, interior architecture and design and building measurement services for the 120,000 square foot tenant improvement project, situated in the Tri-Valley innovation region of the city at 4747 Willow Road.

Unchained Labs provides biologics and gene therapy researchers new tools to break free from conventional approaches that have underperformed. According to the biotech innovator, its mission is unleashing problem-tackling solutions that make a difference in the real science researchers do every day.

The project consolidates the company’s operations from its three smaller previous locations into this larger two-story building. Designed spaces within the renovated facility include 53,887 square feet of office, 20,379 square feet of manufacturing, and 14,779 square feet of lab and warehouse spaces.

“Our interior design process was inspired by Unchained Labs’ company culture,” said Kirsten Lien, Director, Interior Architecture & Design for Ware Malcomb. “This space ties together the established environments and caters to a collaborate, cohesive space.”

The company’s branding colors provided inspiration for creating “neighborhoods” and a wayfinding system within the building, with color themes to distinguish conferencing, huddle spaces, and phone rooms. Other new designed spaces included an ‘all hands room,’ a gym and locker area with specialty private shower areas. The team paid special attention to effective lighting design to support the flexibility to video conference from any room, while ensuring good lighting on all participants.

Construction of new wet labs for life science research and development focused on a ‘plug and play’ approach. “The lab room spaces are flexible by design, with electrical drops coming from the ceiling and nitrogen compressed air to support Unchained Labs’ research,” said Luciana Arim, Director, Science & Technology for Ware Malcomb. The lab area also includes state-of-the-art clean room and humidity-controlled room facilities.

The renovation included work on outdoor spaces including a facelift for the building’s existing metal canopy, the addition of electric vehicle charging stations, and loading dock construction. Ware Malcomb’s team also provided civil engineering services focused on ADA compliance as well as an update to the site landscaping.

General contracting services for the project were provided by Metcon

Ware Malcomb previously completed a tenant improvement of the Unchained Labs headquarters in 2016. The design team was pleased to partner with Unchained Labs to continue their partnership and further renovate the headquarters.
