Bryant University’s Exercise and Movement Science Lab

Bryant University’s Exercise and Movement Science lab, as part of the School of Health and Behavioral Sciences’ Exercise and Movement Science, is helping students gain tangible experience in the athletic and fitness realm.

Supporting careers such as exercise physiology and biomechanics, a cohort of 20 students have access to a range of well-designed technological services and products to train them for their respective career endeavors.

The lab is fitted with a collaboration space, conference room, two portable metabolic systems, air pressure strength training machines, a motion capture system with reflectors and ten infrared cameras, hospital-grade cardiac rehabilitation bikes, treadmills with harnesses, and metabolic carts to analyze carbon dioxide production, oxygen consumption, and respiratory gases.

In addition, there is also a body composition area that uses air pressure technology and features a device known as a BOD POD. The space also features a bioelectrical impedance analysis scale that sends low-voltage electrical currents to the body to provide body composition statistics.

In the future, the lab will work with the campus’s biology and physics labs, as well as its athletics department to allow other university divisions to make use of the space and to assist in monitoring athletes.
