New technologies, scientific breakthroughs, and global demand are transforming the life science industry. Every element of research and production is evolving at an unprecedented pace, fueling demand for new facilities to support the life-saving mission of these highly specialized companies.

This course provides an overview of design considerations when starting design for laboratory spaces for known and unknown user groups; reviews market trends involving repositioning of existing space, such as office and warehouse, for laboratory use; introduces some common engagement tools in the pre-design phase that impact the development of scientific workspace for an integrated design solution; and enables you to learn about the life cycle of companies developing life-saving medicines, therapies, and technologies for human health, and the facilities necessary to support people, process, and community.

Learning objectives:

  1. Define basic umbrella terms regarding science and technology and different types of laboratory tenant in the life science ecosystem

  2. Describe the laboratory planning design process, integration with other disciplines, and common tools for stakeholder involvement and criteria documentation during the pre-design phase

  3. Discuss the different challenges and opportunities of repositioning existing properties for life science use

  4. Learn about the unique considerations and approach for designing laboratory space to accommodate unknown users (speculative laboratories) to support speed-to-science
