Discover the hidden challenges when renovating a lab facility with an existing ventilation system
Learn how to choose the appropriate HVAC systems, fume hoods, and other equipment for your project
Gain the skills needed to communicate your lab’s needs with site owners and equipment suppliers
Sessions
Laboratory Ventilation—A Breath of Fresh Air
11:00 am EDT
This presentation will discuss laboratory ventilation best practices and how they relate to HVAC design, construction, and operations. Applicable codes, standards, and guidelines will be discussed so that designers, contractors, and owners will be aware of valuable reference materials for future project efforts. Best practice laboratory ventilation rates for various types of spaces will also be reviewed, some of the space types included in the discussion will be biological laboratories, animal holding spaces, chemical laboratories, and wet laboratories. Exhaust air filtration methodologies for laboratories will also be discussed and for what laboratory types of air filtration should be applied. The use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models during design to verify ventilation effectiveness will be reviewed and examples from past projects will be presented to illustrate how the CFD model can be used to reduce both first costs and operational costs once the proposed facility is in operation.
Learning objectives:
Learn which codes, standards, and guidelines are pertinent to laboratory ventilation design.
Learn best practice ventilation rates for various space types.
Learn what types of filtration methods are available and to which laboratory types they should be applied.
Learn how computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling can reduce both first cost and operational cost of laboratory ventilation systems.

Lab Airflow Optimization: What You Must Know
12:30 pm EDT
Airflow Optimization (AO) is the most impactful decarbonization measure clients can pursue. For each dollar invested, clients see a 5X reduction in further net zero spending while achieving outstanding ROIs, safer research spaces, and a data layer to maintain this for perpetuity. For these reasons, Owner Occupiers of research spaces are rapidly pursuing AO across their portfolios—both in new construction and existing facilities. Learn why, who, and how AO can impact you or your clients, and how this is rapidly becoming ubiquitous in today’s smart and safe research environments.
Takeaways:
Impact of Airflow Optimization—ROI towards net zero
How AO provides safer research spaces through a data-driven approach
A 15-year case study—proof from a world-leading institution
Learning objectives:
Learn how airside efficiency can drive decarbonization as part of a net zero lab strategy.
Understand how adaptive airflow provides a better data driven approach to maintaining stringent requirements while reducing carbon emissions.
Analyze how a dollar invested can produce a 5X reduction in future net zero spending.
Learn from peer organizations about projects they have completed to decarbonize their labs.

Lab Ventilation Design Evaluation and Optimization Using CFD
2:00 pm EDT
Often high airflow rates or air change rates per hour (ACH) for laboratory spaces are specified to cover the risk of chemical exposure. The design of HVAC system and flow path of airborne contaminants play a crucial role in determining the exposure and safety of occupants.
This presentation with the help of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis will demonstrate how to evaluate and optimize the ventilation design for laboratories. In addition, this presentation—with the help of insightful animations—will demonstrate the role of ACH in the design of lab ventilation.
Learning objectives:
Understand the purpose of laboratory ventilation.
Learn about various factors that affect ventilation effectiveness for laboratories.
Understand how CFD can be applied to optimize the performance of laboratory ventilation.
Learn how use Spread Index metric to estimate ventilation effectiveness for laboratories.
