Retaining Industry Insights on the Second Day of the Lab Design Conference

The 22nd annual Lab Design Conference began its second day on May 17, with a networking breakfast for architects, engineers, lab planners, and other leading industry professionals.

Throughout the day conference goers were able to attend presentations of their choosing in various categories, including career growth, future-forward design, renovation, sustainability, robotics, and animal research.

The morning roaster kick-started with Jennifer Swedell and Edgar Beltran from CO Architects on how to create high-containment core labs out of aging underused spaces. Following, was a series of innovative presentations including one from Cynthia Walston, Garth Shaw, and Donavon Minnis, on transforming a shopping mall into a biotech lab space. Mark Corey and Jason Kumorek also presented in the morning on automation and robotics for material handling and vivaria.

Following additional morning presentations, guests mingled at a social lunch and then heard from the afternoon experts from HOK, CannonDesign, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Arup, Stowers Institute for Medical Research, and more.

Some presentation highlights included a case study on structural and vibrational engineering from Michael Wesolowsky, Kara Raymond, Thornton Tomasetti, and David Oh. Other presentations included setting the stage for robotic surgical innovation and training from Michael Petti, Bailey Edward, and Carlos Amato, and mitigating renovation challenges from Alyson Malec, Emily McCann, and Bhavik Tejwani.

The Lab Design Conference will be held in Phoenix, Arizona in May 2024. If you are interested in participating or have any questions please contact MaryBeth DiDonna at
