Plans Underway for an Interdisciplinary Instruction and Research Building

UC Santa Cruz is set to open an Interdisciplinary Instruction and Research Building (IIRB) after receiving approval in 2023.

Preliminary designs are already set for the facility which will house laboratories for interdisciplinary usage, large projects, and undergraduate courses in biology, chemistry, and physics currently held in other older campus buildings.

The design process is spearheaded by Ennead Architects and will focus on collaboration, representation, and inclusion, as well as academic vigor.

β€œThe new IIRB prioritizes equity and inclusion by demystifying & diversifying scientific instruction and student research and inviting students to create their own scientific identities and be at home in the sciences,” stated the press release.

Plans for the project will be updated throughout 2024.
