The Integrated Engineering Research Center (IERC) is a laboratory, technical, and office building with a focus on collaboration spaces for the Fermilab scientific and engineering community. The IERC will be located to the northeast of historic Wilson Hall and will connect directly to the Wilson Hall ground floor and atrium. As the first cross-divisional facility on Fermilab’s campus, the IERC will serve as an integrator for various research efforts.
Most notably, the IERC will be home to various detector development projects in support of DUNE (Deep-Underground Neutrino Experiment). In this capacity, the IERC is home to a variety of ISO classified cleanroom facilities as well as “clean-ish” project development laboratories. Designed with adaptability in mind, the IERC project spaces are capable of “up-scaling” in clean-class if research programs require more stringency in the future.
The IERC is envisioned as a state-of-the-art building with laboratories equipped to deliver on major initiatives in particle physics. The purpose of the IERC project is to construct a building that provides laboratory space for facilities needed for particle physics detector research, development, and detector construction for the United States Department of Energy projects. In April 2021, the IERC team completed the steel structure for the new building. Substantial completion is expected in 2022.
