Jonathan Klane

Jonathan Klane is the senior safety editor at Lab Manager and a speaker at the upcoming Lab Design Conference in Phoenix, Arizona.

Jonathan’s workshop will be available for an additional cost and will cover lab design principles to improve your EHSR practices with a particular focus on the safety, opportunity and risk during the lab design, construction and operation processes.

As a long-time Arizona resident, Jonathan shared some local Arizona hotspots and favorties to include during your off time at the conference.

Phoenix and Downtown:

We’re sad to have lost the 2023 World Series, but take in a game here in 2024 and cheer them on again!

We’re privileged to have 11 Frank Lloyd Wright buildings in Arizona, with the Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix.

It’s a very walkable area with galleries, boutique shops, restaurants and bars.

Have fun checking out downtown by doing a scavenger hunt for you and your team!

We’ve got plenty of fun casinos to see a show, enjoy great food, and/or have fun gambling!

The greater Phoenix megalopolis area:

  • The Hall of Flame is the world’s largest firefighting and fire safety museum

It’s a huge museum (despite its outward appearance) and a great take-in for adults and families alike.

This is a lovely walking display of our many desert plants here in the Valley of the Sun.

This is a great desert park with many trails, bike paths, and vehicle access – be sure to check out “Hole in the Rock” or play a round of golf – with balls or Frisbees!

This is a fun area to walk around with its “mix of urban chic and Old West charm,” there are lots of shops, art galleries, restaurants, and bars. It has a rather vibrant nightlife, too.

Here is one other Frank Lloyd Wright building close by in Scottsdale, his well-known Taliesin West winter home and studio.

Why not take an official campus-wide tour or just wander about? Be sure to walk the first floor of the life sciences building and check out the many rattlesnakes in their terrariums!

Arizona at large:

What can one say about an amazing natural phenomenon – you’ve got to see it and experience it in person!

This is a beautiful area with red rocks galore to explore and a lovely downtown – be sure to take a Jeep tour over the trails!

Check out this real old western former mining ghost town!

This is a fun town with a vibrant free spirit atmosphere of many cool events, attractions, galleries, shops, and dining!

Yes, this is that Tombstone from stories and movies! C’mon down and experience the old and wild west as it was – be sure to watch the shootout show!

Arizona has tons of fairs and festivals year-round, and May is chock full of them!
