Johns Hopkins Reveals Design Plans For New Medical Campus Building
In November, Johns Hopkins shared design plans for a new medical campus in honor of the late Henrietta Lacks, an African-American mother of five whose cancer cells, named HeLa cells, led to breakthroughs in medical care after receiving treatment for cervical cancer at Johns Hopkins Hospital in the 1950s.
The roughly 34,000-square-foot building in East Baltimore’s Eager Park community will connect to Deering Hall, known for the Berman Institute of Bioethics. The space aims to support university programs including those at the Berman Institute and at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine with its classroom and program space that can be used for support, education, research, and community use.
One of the goals of the new medical campus is to expand capacities in scholarship, teaching, and community building; the other is to champion efforts to address biomedical research and healthcare inequities.
An additional feature of this project is the aim to allocate 30 percent of its addressable spending to minority-owned, women-owned, and disadvantaged business enterprises, as well as another 20 percent directed to local businesses.
Vines Architecture, an African- American owned firm based in Raleigh North Carolina is set as the projects design architect.
Mahogany, a Baltimore construction firm, and Turner Construction will provide construction management and pre-construction services.
Construction is set to start in early 2023 and is projected to conclude in 2025.
